The SUPER Awesome Cube was created to add multi-color LEDs to the original Awesome Cube. This kit comes with 7 colors of LEDs that can be placed anywhere on the cube. The kit includes surface mount soldering (SMT) resistors for each LED and a DP3T switch to select battery or 5V (USB). The cube is controlled by a PIC microcontroller with our best program, or you can write your own code following our free video coding tutorials.
Think of the "cube" as an electronics AND programming project. Yes, high school students can definitely learn to write code to a microcontroller! But even better, the students begin to actually "think" like programmers, not just cutting and pasting code. (See our programming page).
This is also a great "electronics" kit. Students solder resistors, transistors, a voltage regulator, LEDs, SMT resistors, IC holder, and a capacitor They have to measure, cut and strip dozens of wires then solder correctly following instructions carefully. The manual has instructor checkpoints along the way.
There is nothing better for students than a take-home project! The pride and enthusiasm you will see, along with students staying late and coming in during lunch to program their "cube" make this kit a showcase project that will recruit students into your program!
